The Board of Directors has decided that this new, more inclusive name is more reflective of our membership, which includes Active Duty, Retired, Honorably Discharged, Reservists, and Guardsmen from the four traditional Department of Defense Armed Services (US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps), but also uniformed members and Veterans from the US Coast Guard (Department of Homeland Security), the US Public Health Service (USPS, US Department of Health and Human Services), and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, US Department of Commerce).

Accordingly, we will close this website soon. All guests are invited to visit our new website, www.vausa.us, for information about our organization, membership, and activities. The Board of Directors, leadership, and vision of our organization remain steadfast.

Also, please visit our Facebook page for all of the latest updates.

Brothers and sisters,

September 27 is only weeks away…if you are in the area, please come and join us.  This is the first time that we are having a banquet with full US Military protocols.  The Old Guard will be our Colors Guards.  We will have our parent’s generation, the Vietnam Veterans, and our children’s generation at this event.  The theme is to “Honor our Past; Recognize our Present; Promote our Future.”  Come to see your brothers and sisters, your uncles and aunts, and your nieces and nephews.  In 10 years, if we want to honor our parents, it would be too late.  They won’t be around.  Let’s come together to say thanks to our parents for their sacrifices, to celebrate our accomplishments, and to recognize the next generation.

Here is the website for you to purchase the ticket:

And for each attendee, you will receive a commemorate coin.  I hope that you can join us at this event.

Next Fallen Heroes Scholarship Awards in 2014 http://www.vaafa.org/2013/05/12/next-fallen-heroes-scholarship-awards-in-2014/ http://www.vaafa.org/2013/05/12/next-fallen-heroes-scholarship-awards-in-2014/#comments Mon, 13 May 2013 03:16:32 +0000 http://www.vaafa.org/?p=1496 VAAFA has decided to award its twelve $1000 scholarships on a bi-annual basis starting in 2012. Thus, the VAAFA Scholarship Board will review applications in the Spring of 2014. Awardees will be selected and granted the scholarship at the beginning of the school year in Fall 2014.

The scholarship selection criteria and process will not change, but will simply be every two years, instead of on an annual basis. The scholarships were previously awarded in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause. Switching to a two-year cycle allows us to make the best use of our precious volunteer time, preserve our financial resources, and ensure that we select those candidates who best exemplify the excellence, service, and leadership that VAAFA and our Fallen Heroes stand for.

Our next scholarship fundraising and Fallen Heroes tribute banquet will be in the fall of 2014 at a time and location to be determined.

In the meantime, please keep checking this website and our Facebook page for the very latest updates regarding the scholarship and the banquet.

Faithfully at your service,

VAAFA Executive Committee

Fourth Annual VAAFA Fallen Heroes Scholarship Banquet a success in Indiannapolis http://www.vaafa.org/2012/11/25/fourth-annual-vaafa-fallen-heroes-scholarship-banquet-a-success-in-indiannapolis/ http://www.vaafa.org/2012/11/25/fourth-annual-vaafa-fallen-heroes-scholarship-banquet-a-success-in-indiannapolis/#comments Mon, 26 Nov 2012 03:53:19 +0000 http://www.vaafa.org/?p=1473 Indianapolis, IN – On September 30th, 2012, VAAFA held its Fourth Annual Fallen Heroes Scholarship Banquet to pay tribute to the sacrifices of Vietnamese-American Servicemembers. The Scholarship Banquet is the premier annual gathering for VAAFA’s worldwide membership as well as an opportunity to showcase VAAFA’s accomplishments to the Vietnamese-American communities.

This year, VAAFA was honored to be hosted by the warmth and hospitality of Indianapolis, thanks to the hard work of lead organizer and VAAFA co-founder,  Chris Phan (LCDR, USN) and his family and friends. Indianapolis enjoys both deep patriotic roots as well as a vibrant and close-knit Vietnamese-American community.

Over 300 attendees enjoyed remarks by local leaders, including the chapter presidents of the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America. The audience enthusiastically received emcee Mr. Nam Lộc and singers Ms. Bảo Ngọc and Mr.Bằng Kiều, celebrities from the Vietnamese entertainment industry.

Over $12,000 was raised during the event, all of which will go to fund the Fallen Heroes Scholarship.

Also at the event, VAAFA elected a new leadership team, led by Ross Nguyen (LTC, US Army-retired) of Springfield, Virginia, who recently retired from the US Army after 28 years of active service (including Operation Iraqi Freedom).

Every year, the VAAFA Fallen Heroes Scholarship Banquet is held to commemorate the sacrifices of those Twelve Vietnamese-American Servicemembers who have died overseas on active duty since September 11, 2001 (and one who was killed in the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia).

This year, six students from around the United States qualified for VAAFA’s Fallen Heroes Scholarship. Twelve scholarships are awarded bi-annually—the next round of scholarship applications will be accepted beginning in May 2014 and awarded in Fall 2014.

Past Fallen Heroes Banquets have been held in Westminster, CA, Houston, TX, and Washington DC.  Details regarding the location and date for the Fall 2013 Fallen Heroes Banquet will be determined soon.
